BELLEVILLE — The William and Florence Schmidt Art Center will celebrate its 21st anniversary and grand reopening with a presentation by 21 artists of their work alongside a selection from the college’s permanent collection.

The exhibition “21 years: 21 artists” will be presented at the Schmidt Art Center from August 19 to October 19. 7 on the campus of Southwestern Illinois College Belleville, 2500 Carlyle Ave. with an opening reception from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, August 18. “Since the Schmidt Art Center was closed due to the pandemic for our 20th anniversary, we wanted the upcoming reopening to commemorate this milestone,” said Schmidt Art Center curator Sean FitzGibbons. “This year we celebrate Schmidt’s 21st birthday. During these 21 years, there has been a strong tradition of collaboration with local and regional artists.

Artists who will showcase their paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, ceramics and multimedia pieces at the event include Dawn Marie Blum, Andrea Coates, Nicole Cooper, JT Felix, Jessica Forys-Cameron, Charlie Houska, Tom Hück, Noah Kirby, Andrew Koester and Marianne Laury.

Also, Todd May, Metra Mitchell, Shawn Niebruegge, Allison Ouellette-Kirby, Libby Reuter, Bryce Robinson, Cory Sellers, Daniel Stumeier, Sarah Swist, Sopearb Touch and Deborah Wheeler.

Artwork featured in the college’s collection will include works by Ernest Trova, Robert Rauschenberg, Alice Neel, Dorothea Lange and Jill Downen.

“I really enjoyed putting on this exhibition. I wanted to highlight that story of direct connection to our community,” FitzGibbons said. “21 Years: 21 Artists not only showcases our region’s incredible talent, it’s also an opportunity to showcase Schmidt’s fantastic collection.
