The Torpedo Factory Art Center needs volunteers, as do many organizations in Alexandria | ALXnow

There are still several ways to volunteer in Alexandria this summer.

Art and music lovers can find happiness volunteering as gallery guides at the Torpedo Factory Art Center or as ushers with the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra.

As the next school year prepares, there are also a number of tutoring and mentoring positions available, in addition to available food distributor and donation sorting positions.

“We need hundreds of people a week,” Marion Brunken, general manager of Volunteer Alexandria, told ALXnow. “More people are in need now than ever.”

Here is a list of new and upcoming opportunities from Volunteer Alexandria.

  • Teaching children to read — “Wright to Read is a literacy tutoring and mentoring program that matches volunteer tutor-mentors with Alexandria Public School students who need extra support with their literacy skills. Our goal is not only to help support this child through their reading journey (including access to books, resources, and a wider reading community), but also a lifelong mentor. from primary school and beyond.
  • Distribute food with ALIVE! — “Volunteers are needed to help with several programs related to their food program, ALIVE! House and the Alexandria Eviction Prevention Partnership Program will distribute food at Mobile Pop-ups and Truck to Trunk events, and more.
  • Help provide meals for children – “Alexandria City Public School (ACPS) will provide two days of breakfast and lunch with a complimentary snack pack for any student enrolled in CSPA on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The Friday distribution will include one or more meals for Saturday. Volunteers will meet at various schools to help pack boxes and load buses with boxed meals. Afterwards, volunteers will take the bus to distribute the meals on site at a few CSGA mobile outlets. Click on each location to register: Francis C.   • The theater group needs support — Momentum Collective is looking for a new board member, costume designer and set builder.
  • Sports coaches for young people — Preside over team activities, including all scheduled practices and matches. Adhere to RPCA policies, rules and objectives Responsible for maintaining the upkeep of all RPCA sports equipment. Lead by example among team parents to support umpire and league management responsibilities. Coach an assigned group of children and focus on skill development, safety, fairness, play, sportsmanship and fun.
  • 4-H Youth Development Club Volunteers — “We are currently looking for volunteers who want to start clubs on any topic of interest, such as dogs, sewing, robotics or sports.”
  • food rescuer — “Food Rescuers collect excess food from Northern Virginia and District of Columbia food donors (businesses, restaurants, and grocery stores) and deliver directly to receiving agencies (community kitchens, food pantries, etc.) that feed our starving neighbours. In your own vehicle and at your own pace, it usually only takes 30-60 minutes to complete this incredibly rewarding and essential mission.   • Alexandria Meals on Wheels Senior Services — “Meals on Wheels provides meals for seniors who can’t leave their homes to shop or who have difficulty preparing a meal, to have two healthy meals delivered to their home a day.”
  • Senior Services of Alexandria Grocery Takeout – “Buy and deliver groceries every two weeks to homebound seniors living in the city of Alexandria. You will be paired with a senior, who will provide you with their grocery list.
  • Sexual Assault Center Hotline Advocate — “Volunteers take care of the hotline 24 hours a day in the evening and on weekends. Volunteers provide accompaniment, emotional support, crisis intervention, advocacy and referrals to empower survivors of sexual violence in person at the hospital/police department or over the phone. Volunteers must undergo 40 hours of training.
  • Teaching positions at Friends of Guest Housee — “Friends of Guest House – Various teaching positions Need dedicated volunteers to teach various subjects and skills courses to women. The ideal volunteer will be patient and interested in the success of these women as they deepen their knowledge. Volunteers are also needed to help with vaccination pods and teach addiction, substance abuse, and recovery classes. To register and learn more, click HERE.
  • Torpedo Factory Gallery Guide — “Gallery guides should feel comfortable interacting with the public about the artwork in the exhibition with potentially sensitive content and handling requests for the sale of artwork. Gallery guides must be at least 18 years old.
  • Casa Chirilagua Volunteers – Casa Chirilagua is looking for one-on-one mentorship, their kids club, a volunteer to oversee the teen study hall, a high school curriculum helper, a teen bible study volunteer, and a college curriculum helper .
  • ESL parental support — “We are looking for volunteers who will play, read and lead activities for children while their parents participate in English as a second language. This program would take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 10am. Parents will be present in the same room. All volunteers should undergo a background check and provide vaccination documentation.
  • Weekly garden maintenance — “Volunteers needed help maintaining this beautiful 25-acre site on the Potomac River. Located just north of Mt. Vernon on the GW Parkway, River Farm is the headquarters of the American Horticultural Society, a national nonprofit organization. Activities include planting, mulching, weeding, pruning and any other weekly garden related projects.
  • Sorting donations – “Join the UpCycle team and help sort and prepare donations to send to the store. UpCycle has an ever-changing inventory of materials and supplies based on the donations we receive from businesses and residents, it does not “No two days are alike. Our donations and materials managers sort and store donations, assess the general organization of the store, and ensure that the donations we accept are clean and undamaged.”
  • Delivery of Learn & PlayGroup leaflets — “Every week we play, sing songs, read books and learn together! This program is offered FREE to all families in the City of Alexandria with young children. But we need help spreading the word! We need volunteers ready to go to parks, grocery stores, laundromats, etc. to post flyers so residents know it’s available! You will receive a list of locations and an area to distribute and display flyers, as well as all supplies needed to display the flyers. We need to distribute and post them a few weeks before the start of our program year the week of August 29th. »
  • Alexandria Symphony Orchestra — “The ASO needs your help to inaugurate performances and carry out other tasks. You can watch the show once the customers are seated. Come and hear this great orchestra if you like the symphony.
  • Employment counselor at Together We Bake — “Looking for a meaningful way to get involved with TWB? We are recruiting volunteers to act as employment counselors for our upcoming sessions. It’s a great opportunity to work one-on-one and build impactful relationships with team members while helping them discover and expand their career goals. »
